Court

According to an article in tomorrow's Washington
Post, a right wing organization, Concerned
Women For America, was consulted on President George
W. Bush's next pick for the Supreme Court, Judge Samuel
Alito.
One group consulted was the Concerned Women
for America, whose decision to oppose Miers last Wednesday
became one of the final blows to help kill the nomination.
Janet M. LaRue, the group's chief counsel, said it
received a call from the White House on Saturday and
liked what it heard.
"[Judge Samuel Alito] and Luttig have always been
at the top of our list," she said in an interview.
"We think either of them would be a supreme pick.
There isn't a thing stealthy about them. They've got
a long, proven record of constitutional conservatism."
In August of 2004, blogACTIVE,
the editor's blog of PageOneQ,
reported that the Chief Financial Officer of Concerned
Women for America, Lee LaHaye was a gay man.
LaHaye is the son of CWA's founders Timothy and Beverly
LaHaye.
"I find it rather odd that a conservative President
would turn to such a confused organization to vet
his picks for the Supreme Court," said Michael Rogers,
editor of blogACTIVE
andPageOneQ.
And the fact an organization with a gay man as it's
Chief Financial Officer would approve of such far
right wing judges is further proof of the dysfunction
of the organization's agenda and its operation."
The group's counsel, Janet LaRue, expressed happiness
with two of the three leading candidates reported
on by the Washington Post, Judges Samuel A. Alito
Jr. and J. Michael Luttig. According to the Post,
Alito is nicknamed "Scalito" by those who find him
similar to one of the court's most conservative members,
Justice Antonin Scalia.
Update: This article was updated at 8:53am
on October 31, 2005 to reflect the nomination of Judge
Samuel Alito for the Court.
