The Morning Call, a paper serving Pennsylvania's LeHigh Valley reported today that US Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) has launched a campaign to gain female supporters for his reelection campaign to the US Senate.
The campaign has also launched a web address, WomenForRick.com, target women voters in the fall campaign. Currently, Santorum trails his Democratic opponent, Bob Casey, Jr., by 9 percent in a recent poll by Strategic Vision.
The Morning Call reports:
U.S. Sen.
Rick Santorum, who has some ground to catch up on when it comes to female voters,
made a concerted effort Monday to pull more women into his flock of supporters.
In a room filled with about 50 women at Central Pennsylvania College in this
Cumberland County community, Santorum unveiled an advertising strategy designed
to appeal to women.
"I know I get a lot of flak for not being great … on women's issues," Santorum
told the crowd.
Stating his own case, Santorum talked about his support for education-related
issues and for aid to small businesses, including those led by women. He also
noted that women comprise most of his senior staff.
The web address WomenForRick.com redirects to a page for women on Santorum's site. The site touts his accomplishments for women, including:
• Senator Santorum
introduced the Healthy Marriages and Responsible Fatherhood Act, which would
strengthen fragile families through programs designed to help men take responsibility
for their children, and requires organizations that receive grant money to coordinate
with a state or local domestic violence center.
• Senator Santorum
cosponsored the Unborn Victims of Violence Law which makes it a federal offense
to injure or kill an unborn child while committing a federal crime against an
expectant mother.
• Senator Santorum
led the Republican Poverty Alleviation Agenda and the Welfare Reform of 1996.
He supports the Welfare Reform Reauthorization, which frees even more individuals
from the cycle of welfare dependency.
Legislation:
• Senator Santorum
also introduced the Savings and Working Families Act of 2005, which builds on
existing Individual Development Account (IDA) programs by creating tax credit
incentives for banks and credit unions to offer special savings accounts to
low-income Americans and match their deposits dollar-for-dollar.
