Santorum opponent returns $2,100 gift to gay columnist

by PageOneQ

Dan Savage, author of the nationally syndicated column, Savage Love has written this week that Bob Casey, the Democratic opponent of Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), has returned a campaign gift of $2,100.

It's no secret that Savage is not a fan of Santorum. Through his column he recruited nominations and then votes for a project to create a definition of "santorum' and then to encourage his readers to "google bomb" the site . ("Googlebomb" is a popular term for the process of having many sites link to a particular site with the intent of raising its ranking in Google searches.) The successful Googlebomb effort resulted in Savages's "SpreadingSantorum.com" site to be the first result when web survers search "Santorum" in Google. In May of last year, "Googlebomb" was added to the New Oxford American Dictionary. As a result of Savage's campaign, "santorum" is now defined as "The frothy mix of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex."

In his column this week, Savage, an openly gay man who, with his partner, has adopted a son, wrote:

Casey is worried that Santorum's flying monkeys will spot my name on his campaign-finance reports and raise holy hell about it. And Casey didn't want to wind up debating the merits of the frothy mix—still the number-one result when you Google "santorum"—with Senator Santorum.

Savage asked his readers to support Casey, despite his anti-choice stance on abortion rights. Savage, a supporter of a woman's right to control her own body, counseled readers that it was, in his opinion, better to elect an anti-choice Democrat, who would help the pro-choice Democratic Senate caucus to gain power, instead of a GOP

candidate, who would join the GOP caucus.

Although Casey's campaign returned the gift, the campaign manager gave Savage a list of groups which he thought would assist the Seante hopeful's campaign, "Perry [the campaign manager] suggested names of some independent groups in Pennsylvania working to elect Casey, groups that might be willing to take my dirty money.) I still want Casey to beat the lube-and-fecal-matter-splattered pants off Santorum this November. That’s why I’m sending the $2,100 Casey spurned to Philadelphians Against Santorum," Savage explained. Incidentally, Philadephians Against Santorum was not on the list of groups suggested by the Casey campaign.
