Larry Craig gives money to dudes...

by PageOneQ

Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho), disgraced after his arrest for seeking sex in the Minneapolis, Minnesota airport, is, according to the Capital Hill newspaper Roll Call, "still willing to pay for dudes. Well, for a dude ranch, anyway."

According to today's item, written by the paper's Heard on the Hill columnists Emily Heil and Anna Palmer, Craig has secured $1.6 million in funding for Idaho's Gold Creek Ranch. Known as "earmarks," the funds were designated by Craig. The request for the earmark came from President Bush.

The article also reports that Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) likened Craig to the nation's third president, Thomas Jefferson.

Excerpts from the registration restricted article follow.

Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig insists he isnít gay and that he wasnít soliciting sex before his arrest last summer. But heís still willing to pay for dudes. Well, for a dude ranch, anyway.

Craig, the ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies before being forced to step down this fall after his sex scandal, still got an earmark in the omnibus spending bill allocating $1.6 million to Idahoís Gold Creek Ranch.

Although the amendment failed, the floor debate gave Craig a rare opportunity to win praise from his GOP colleagues, including Sens. Wayne Allard (Colo.) and Sam Brownback (Kan.), who havenít always been so supportive of their scandal-plagued colleague.

Brownback went so far as to liken Craigís efforts to the founding fathers, invoking the words of Thomas Jefferson.
