Leading civil rights Senator to be honored at Denver Convention

by PageOneQ

One of just 14 senators who opposed the Defense of Marriage Act will be honored Monday evening at the Democratic National Convention. The tribute to Senator Ted Kennedy will take place on the opening night of the Denver gathering. The event will include a speech by Kennedy's niece, Caroline Kennedy and a documentary film about the 7 term senator by noted filmmakers Ken Burns and Mark Herzog.

Kennedy has a long history of supporting civil rights for LGBT Americans and has consistently scored a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign. Kennedy's record includes support of full marriage equality, hate crime laws and legislation supporting HIV/AIDS programs.

Chuck Wolfe, president of the Victory Fund told PageOneQ "Senator Kennedy received the Victory Fund's Oates-Shrum Award in 2004 to honor his unyielding support for the LGBT community. He deserves to be recognized by all Americans for his strong commitment to fairness and equality, and for his lifetime of service to this country."

The tribute to Senator Kennedy is scheduled to be presented at approximately 9pm ET.

Andy Tobias, Treasurer of the DNC is slated to speak between 5pm and 9pm ET. Tobias, author of the popular gay coming of age novel The Best Little Boy in the World, has written three new York Times best sellers on personal financial management.

Tobias will be speaking shortly after Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is scheduled to speak between 5pm and 9pm ET.
