Major LGBT blog taken offline by hackers

by PageOneQ

UPDATE: Pam's House Blend is back online as of 12:30pm Eastern

SoapBlox, host of Pam Spaulding's group blog Pam's House Blend, was subject to a hack on Tuesday that took several blogs offline.

"It was a good ride, but it's over," Paul Preston of SoapBlox wrote. "All these hackers messing with our stuff, and we here at SoapBlox have no clue what to do. We don't have enough knowledge, time, money, or care to fix it...Consider this the 'We're Out of Business' post."

A group called Astalavista has been linked to the hijacking of the affected server, now taken offline by the ISP, and using it to perform attacks on other websites, according to a notation on SoapBlox's front page.

It is not known what can be salvaged. Other sites affected include RadicalRuss.net, BlueJersey, American Liberalism and BeThink.org.

"I wish I could see a bright side to this," Spaulding told PageOneQ. "It's incredible that years of hard work can be destroyed in a flash, but we're in the digital age and there are people motivated to silence voices through malicious acts. I'm hopeful that data will be recovered, but Paul Preston of Soapblox has said he will not restore any sites. That means Pam's House Blend will need to find a new hosting platform and a redesign. That will take a good amount of time."

Spaulding, a North Carolina native, founded Pam's House Blend in July 2004. The Blend, averaging 120,000 hits a month, has since become a strong voice in LGBT politics and advocacy, picking up the Weblog Awards' "Best LGBT Blog" honor two years in a row (2005 and 2006). Spaulding has appeared on numerous media outlets, including CNN, and was credentialed for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. She has also spoken at events such as the International Gay & Lesbian Leadership Conference, and interviewed figures such as Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and star comedienne Margaret Cho.

Spaulding has also been interviewed or profiled in newspapers such as the Washington Post, New York Times and the Raleigh News & Observer along with LGBT publications such as the Washington Blade and The Advocate.
