Transgender job bank website debuts

by Nick Langewis

"Even if I 'passed' unquestionably, a background check outed me every time," said TJobBank founder and Director of Implementation Jillian Barfield. "It was such an unfair process that I decided to do what I could to help trans-people find work."

Launched in late July and described as the first and only organization dedicated to providing employment services to the transgender community, TJobBank's objective is to connect transgender professionals with inclusive employers, aiming to "bring hope to those in the historically under-employed transgender population."

"When you think about it," Barfield told Transgender Workplace Diversity's Dr. Jillian T. Weiss, "a recruiter's job is to find a candidate that they feel will be the best fit for a given position, but they tend to present candidates that will be 'acceptable' with as little opposition from their customer - the employer. They have no incentive to present a trans-person for a job."

When answering a TJobBank posting, candidates have control over how much personal information they provide prospective employers. There is currently no charge for employers or candidates to use the service.

"In addition to being a part of history," Ms. Barfield added, "the presence of job listings posted by proactive companies on our site spotlights their organization's commitment to true workplace diversity while at the same time tapping into an all too often overlooked but vastly impressive community of talented individuals."
