Website features Republican supporters of gay marriage

by Nick Langewis

The GOP's stance may be wider than you think when it comes to your right to marry.

The Log Cabin Republicans' Republicans Against 8 describes itself as a "coalition of Republicans who believe Proposition 8 violates the principles of limited government, personal responsibility, and individual liberty."

Noting that about one in three members of the GOP oppose California's Proposition 8, the coalition also assert that "The institution of marriage can only be strengthened by allowing everyone to participate in its rights and responsibilities." Furthermore, they say, it is not the state's responsibility to dictate who can marry whom, nor is it constitutional, as the California Supreme Court itself ruled this past May 15.

Proposition 8, on California's upcoming November ballot, would write the statute limiting legally recognized civil marriages to heterosexual couples, which was nullified by the May 15 ruling, directly into the state's constitution. Among high-profile opponents of the measure are California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, openly gay vice presidential daughter Mary Cheney, and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, notable for his 2007 change of heart in support of his lesbian daughter's rights:

"Proposition 8 contradicts the conservative principle of limited government by expanding the state’s regulatory powers to dictate who may or may not marry," the site explains. "Regardless of how you feel about the issue of marriage equality, no one's rights and freedoms should be subject to a voter initiative."
