PageOneQ UPDATE: Google has assured me that the ads are now blocked. If you see a Yes On California Prop 8 ad, please let me know at pageonenews(at)gmail.com.
Every so often I get a piece of email that asks why I accept ads from so and so. The most recent incarnation of the email is
WHY are you running ads in favor of California Prop 8 ad on your website?!
The reason is simple, and it's not greed. Google AdSense places advertisements on the page based on textual context. Basically, it reads the page and says "oh, the word 'gay' appears here, so I'll put in an ad that Company X wants to reach gay people with."
It's all well and good until you start, for example, writing about Prop 8. Then ads from various groups related to Prop 8 start to appear, including ones we're not so happy about.
But, Mike, there must be a way to stop it.
YES! And at PageOneQ we have set our Google Ad Account to do that. Why are ads still running for Prop 8? That's a good question...if Google ever replies, I will share the info here.
See the graphic below from our google account, you can see we have made the request.
Since the ads are geotargeted to land on the pages of visitors from California, it would be a huge help to us if you can screenshot the ad and how it appears on the page and then send it to pageonenews(at)gmail.com.
Thanks,
Mike Rogers Publisher
