Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert interviews HRC's Joe Solmonese

by Nick Langewis

For his inaugural "Better Know A Lobbyist" segment, Stephen Colbert brought out his faux-condescending inner pundit to interview HRC president Joe Solmonese.

"I thought you worked for homosexual rights," Colbert says, on learning that "HRC" indeed stands for "Human Rights Campaign," as opposed to "Homosexual Rights Campaign."

"Are you saying that only homosexuals are humans and that straight people aren't humans? That's what you're implying with that name."

"No," rebuts Solmonese, "we're implying that gay rights are human rights."

"Well, I'm straight," counters Colbert. "I can make other humans. Doesn't that give me a leg up?"

"I can make other humans too," Solmonese responds.

"But you choose not to -- so you've chosen not to be human," Colbert fires back.

"No," corrects Solmonese, "I've chosen not to make other humans."

"So, if I use birth control," probes Colbert, "you're saying that makes me gay?"

The entire interview, broadcast on Comedy Central's Colbert Report on February 6, 2008, is available to view below. It includes such words as "man-riage," "trombone," "Appletini" and "gay for Mike Huckabee." Other topics covered include marriage rights, "straight pride parades" and "short shorts."

The second half of the interview can be viewed HERE.
