PageOneQ Senator and Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama openly opposed California's Proposition 8 in a Saturday interview with MTV. "I've stated my opposition to this," the Senator said in response to a question from a viewer in San Leandro, California. "I think it's unnecessary. I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, and I'm not in favor of gay marriage, but when you start playing around with constitutions just to prohibit somebody who cares about another person...it just seems to me that that's not what America is about. Usually, our constitutions expand liberties, they don't contract them." The Obama/Biden campaign is running on an overall pro-LGBT platform, officially opposing discriminatory constitutional amendments. It also calls for equal recognition of same-sex relationships (without the title of marriage) by all levels of the federal government. The campaign also supports the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy, along with the right for an American to sponsor a foreign-born same-sex partner for citizenship and for equal adoption rights for same-sex couples. In addition, the Obama/Biden ticket supports federal-level employment discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity and the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act. A clip of the interview can be viewed below. The remainder is airing on Monday, November 3rd on MTV.
